Global, European and Austrian production and logistics networks face multiple challenges. The overlapping crises of recent years have exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains and production networks, which leads to a multitude of questions regarding the design of more sustainable, resilient networks.

To solve these questions, the institute takes an interdisciplinary approach. ASCII scientists create data-based analytical tools and use methods from mathematics, data and network science, international economics, management science, supply chains and logistics.

The supply chain issue is embedded in overarching risks (e.g. geopolitical discord, trade wars) and the impact of man-made climate change, the mitigation of which will require new production structures and business models. The institute provides data and knowledge bases and acts as the first point of contact for analyzing, evaluating and deriving recommendations for action for time-critical and complex issues related to value chains.

ASCII is being realized in close cooperation with the founding organizations: the Complexity Science Hub, WIFO, Logistikum of the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences and Verein Netzwerk Logistik.

VISION

The Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria sets itself the following goals in the field of supply chain and resilience research:

Fact-based support of economic policy in Austria and the EU on issues related to supply chains and production networks

Direct and practice-oriented knowledge generation in the field of value networks, change processes and their integration into the macroeconomic context

Increasing methodical knowledge to cope with the complexity and dynamics of value networks

International orientation of the training of the next generation

High impact of the results due to the inherent involvement of politics, business and science

Über das Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria (ASCII)

Das Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria (ASCII) ist ein unabhängiges, weltweit führendes Lieferketteninstitut für interdisziplinäre, datengetriebene Analysen globaler Produktions- und Logistiknetzwerke – mit dem Ziel, resiliente, nachhaltige und zukunftsfähige Lieferketten zu gestalten. Das Institut wurde als Forschungs-Joint Venture vom Österreichischen Wirtschaftsforschungsinstitut (WIFO) gemeinsam mit dem Complexity Science Hub (CSH), dem Logistikum der Fachhochschule Oberösterreich und dem Verein Netzwerk Logistik (VNL) im Jahr 2023 gegründet.

Assoz.-Prof. Dr. Peter Klimek, Direktor des ASCII

Peter Klimek ist einer der führenden Komplexitätsforscher und Direktor des Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria (ASCII). Der promovierte Physiker ist zudem assoziierter Professor an der MedUni Wien und Fakultätsmitglied des Complexity Science Hub Vienna, wo er mit seinem Team während der Covid-19-Pandemie zentrale Modellrechnungen für Österreich durchführte. In dieser Zeit avancierte Klimek zu einem der renommiertesten Corona-Experten des Landes und wurde 2021 als „Wissenschaftler des Jahres“ ausgezeichnet. Klimek ist Mitglied zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Beiräte und wurde mehrfach für seine Arbeit an der Schnittstelle von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet. Er ist Autor von mehr als 120 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und Autor eines Lehrbuchs über Komplexe Systeme. Seine Forschung verbindet Methoden aus der Netzwerkanalyse, Ökonomie und Datenwissenschaft, um Risiken, Abhängigkeiten und Verwundbarkeiten in globalen Lieferketten, Versorgungsnetzwerken und Gesundheitssystemen sichtbar zu machen. Seit März 2023 leitet er das ASCII, wo er datenbasierte Modelle zur Analyse von globalen Lieferketten sowie Produktions- und Versorgungsnetzwerken entwickelt, um diese resilienter und nachhaltiger gestalten zu können.
