Economic Dependencies in a Fragmenting World: Resilience, Competitiveness, and Europe’s Strategic Choices

Wednesday, 8 July 2026, 6 pm

Austrian National Bank / Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), Otto-Wagner-Platz 3, 1090 Vienna

When supply networks function smoothly, they tend to remain invisible. It is only when disruptions occur that their importance becomes unmistakable, for industrial production, critical infrastructure, economic well-being, and financial stability.

In an era of geopolitical tension, technological rivalry, and climate-related shocks, economic dependencies have become a defining issue, not only for Europe, but for the global economy. Governments, companies, and societies are reassessing how exposed they are to concentrated suppliers, critical raw materials, key technologies, and strategically sensitive industries.

What has changed most profoundly are the technological possibilities to understand, measure, and manage risk. Advances in data availability, firm-level supply-network mapping, and complexity-based modelling now allow vulnerabilities to be identified earlier and resilience to be designed proactively rather than tested by crisis.

This public discussion brings together perspectives from economics, policy, and system science to explore how Europe can strengthen resilience while remaining an open, competitive, and reliable actor in the world economy.

The aim of this event is to identify specific priority areas for action to ensure Europe’s economic resilience.

High-level experts from economics, policy, and system science discuss how Europe can reduce economic dependencies and define concrete priorities to strengthen resilience while remaining open and competitive.
