3-Year PhD Position in Supply Network Modelling and Analysis



We are looking for an excellent young scientist with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) with a quantitative focus (e.g., data science, physics, mathematics, economics, operations research, supply chain management).

In your Master’s thesis, you have successfully shown your quantitative research skills. You have the ability to independently carry out data-intensive research and show good programming (e.g., Python, R), modelling and quantitative skills. Knowledge of databases and web-mining is a plus. Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is a prerequisite.

We search for critical thinkers that are open-minded, have a collaborative spirit and feel comfortable within an interdisciplinary environment cutting across network science, supply chain management, economics, and complex systems. A fully funded 3-year PhD position, part time (30h), € 34.500 gross per year (according to the standard personnel costs and salaries of the Austrian Science Fund FWF), in an exciting research environment at the Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria, close collaboration with colleagues from the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) Vienna, the Austrian Economic Research Institute (WIFO) and the Logistikum at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, next to access to a network of world-renowned researchers and a great community of talented, young and motivated PhD and Postdoc researchers. The PhD will be supervised by Peter Klimek. The position is available from June 2023.

The semiconductor industry is a cornerstone in contemporary technological infrastructure. Embedded in a complex industrial ecosystem it is shaped by regional specialization, evolving, and globally distributed firm networks, and technological innovations. To illustrate the semiconductor value chain and the importance of Austria's industry in it, a team of ASCII scientists led by ASCII Director Peter Klimek analyzed the regional roles within the worldwide semiconductor value chain.
In the 4th Interdisciplinary Workshop on Firm-Level Supply Networks, we bring together leading experts and early career researchers in economics, complex systems, and supply chain management, to discuss recent advances in the analysis of granular supply network data.
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence released the Risk Monitor 2024. The report includes articles by ASCII Director Peter Klimek and ASCII Vice President Gabriel Felbermayr on supply risks in a weakened global economy.
